gallery study: Helmut

Hewton Gallery

For my Gallery/exhibition study i wanted to look at the Helmut Newton Gallery at the “Museum für Fotografie” In Berlin, Germany. The Helmut Newton Gallery space takes up the First and Ground floors of The former military casino in Berlin-Charlottenburg, which they were granted unlimited use of by The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in a Private-Public partnership in 2003. The gallery was first opened to the public in 2004 after the passing of Helmut Newton and features multiple permanent and temporary exhibitions in the Gallery space, with some notable Permanent exhibitions such as “The Living Room”, which was originally planned to be a small apartment space inside the gallery for Helmut and June Newton to stay in when they visited the foundation, however Helmut died before the gallery was opened. Instead of becoming a living space for the couple the space is now an additional exhibition space which initially was used as a space to display photos and pieces of Alice Springs (June Newton), which accompanies other permanent spaces such as “Private Property”. The Gallery space is a permanent space itself with varying exhibitions being switched in and out with the aforementioned permanent spaces being kept constantly, housed inside one larger building that is shared with together with other photographic foundations and exhibitions kept in the higher floors of the same building. All this information is available on the Helmut Newton foundation’s own website at: Visit – HELMUT NEWTON FOUNDATION.
